LAYTON — For a team that has a history of not putting away teams after holding a sizable lead, the Bingham Miners made sure a Northridge comeback wasn't possible.
The Miners sent nine hitters to the plate in each of the fifth, sixth and seven innings and scored a total of 14 runs in those innings to cruise to a 17-6 victory over the Knights (17-6) in the first round of the Class 5A state double-elimination baseball tournament Tuesday.
Bingham (15-8) pounded out 10 of its 15 hits in that span and turned what was a one-run deficit after four innings into a laugher.
"We were fortunate that we started getting some pitches to hit," Bingham coach Joey Sato said. "When they changed pitchers, we kind of got on a roll. That's the first time we've been able to do that."
Northridge starter Aaron Solomon held the Miners to just four hits and three runs and left with the lead.

"I told the kids we needed to keep some pressure on and score some runs. We know what our history is. This is no time to start letting down," Sato said. "Everybody has said if we get on a roll we could be dangerous, and I told our kids the other day that it's getting kind of late. We can't wait until May 20."
With the victory, the Miners meet Taylorsville (21-2), which beat Jordan 13-7, Wednesday at 4 p.m. The two teams met last Saturday, and Taylorsville posted the 7-4 victory. Chad Barben could get the start for the No. 1-ranked Warriors, while lefthander Andy Jangard should get the start for the Miners.
In other key second-round matchups Wednesday, Copper Hills, an 11-1 winner over Fremont, will most likely pitch Jason Price against Brighton, which beat Cottonwood 16-3. Pat Overholt could go for the Bengals.
Bingham starter Dusty Stoker, in firing a complete game, battled tough winds and cold weather along with long waits between innings while his teammates were putting up big numbers. He scattered 10 hits and struck out eight in earning the victory. After the first inning, when he allowed three runs on three hits, Stoker was terrific.
The Miners hit four homers — Matt Rasmussen (solo), Jake Basham (two-run), Cole Anderson (three-run) and Doug Kroll (two-run) — and hit for the cycle as a team in their five-run fifth.
"Can we save some (runs) for (Wednesday) and start with four or five?" Sato quipped.
Kroll finished with two hits and three RBIs, Stoker chipped in with a pair of hits and two RBIs, and BJ Bertoch and Craig McMurtrey also had two RBIs each.
Ryan Riolo paced the Knights with three hits — including a homer — and three RBIs.
The Knights (17-6) host Jordan (9-10) Wednesday at 4 p.m. in a loser-out contest.
