PRONGER HAS SURGERY: St. Louis Blues defenseman Chris Pronger had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right knee, just two weeks after undergoing wrist surgery.

TWINS RIVAS OFF D.L.: The Minnesota Twins finally have their entire starting lineup healthy again after activating second baseman Luis Rivas from the 15-day disabled list.

BROWN IN HOSPITAL: Los Angeles Dodgers ace Kevin Brown has been admitted to a hospital because of a back injury he sustained while playing with his son last week.

Brown would remain in the hospital for at least another day.

RIJO OUT OF REDS ROTATION: Jose Rijo is out of the Cincinnati Reds' rotation again, and it's unclear whether he'll ever get back in.

The 37-year-old pitcher who overcame five major elbow operations will go back in the bullpen for a while, manager Bob Boone said. He gave no indication whether it's a long-term move.

ENRON FIELD NAME CHANGE: The Houston Astros' stadium, without a corporate name since the team bought back the naming rights from bankrupt Enron Corp., will be called Minute Maid Park under a deal announced Wednesday.

The Minute Maid Co., based in Houston, since 1960 has been a subsidiary of The Coca-Cola Co., based in Atlanta.

"The company is a new partnership but an old friend," Astros owner Drayton McLane said.

Soccer

WOLFF SIGNS EXTENSION: Chicago Fire forward Josh Wolff and Major League Soccer agreed to a four-year contract extension worth at least $1.08 million.

Wolff, in South Korea with the U.S. national team, will receive the MLS maximum salary of $270,000. The deal includes a raise for the remainder of this season and gives MLS a two-year option that could extend the contract through 2008.

LOCAL CLUB TRYOUTS: The Westwind Soccer Club will be holding tryouts this weekend for under-13 players — both boys and girls. The tryouts will be held at Bennion Junior High School (2700 West, 6200 South) on Friday evening and again on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.

Golf

NORMAN QUALIFIES: Greg Norman, who hasn't made a cut in the U.S. Open since 1996, and Jean Van de Velde, whose spectacular collapse cost him the 1999 British Open, both earned berths in this year's U.S. Open.

Norman shot a 5-under 139 total to join John Huston and amateur Kevin Warrick as the qualifiers from Old Memorial Golf Club in Tampa, Fla.

Van de Velde was one of 22 players who made it through 36 holes of qualifying in Purchase, N.Y.

Horse racing

BELMONT TUNE UP: War Emblem tuned up for the final time before the Belmont Stakes and trainer Bob Baffert said the black colt was "looking good" for a run at the Triple Crown.

LIFETIME BAN FOR DRUG CHEATS: Drug cheats would face a lifetime ban for a second offense under the first universal doping code for sports.

World Anti-Doping Agency officials unveiled the plan that would suspend first-time offenders for two years.

8 CITIES WANT 2010 GAMES: Eight cities, including the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo, site of the 1984 Winter Olympics, have applied to host the 2010 Winter Games.

Sarajevo joined Salzburg, Austria; Bern, Switzerland; Jaca, Spain; and Andorra La Vella, capital of the mountain state of Andorra, as five European cities to submit applications. Vancouver, Canada; Harbin, China; and Pyongchang, South Korea, also applied.

The winning city will be selected at the International Olympic Committee meeting in Prague, Czech Republic, in July 2003.
