Four international companies, including Lindon-based Caldera, have announced that UnitedLinux will be distributed as a closed beta product by the end of the month to their partners. It is expected to be publicly available in open beta by the end of September.

The other companies are Conectiva S.A. of Curitiba, Brazil; SuSE Linux AG of Nuremberg, Germany; and Turbolinux Inc. of Brisbane, Calif.

The UnitedLinux product is the result of an industry initiative to streamline Linux development and certification around a global, uniform distribution of Linux designed for the business user. It takes the collective resources of the four companies and combines them to provide a Linux business infrastructure and product, available in English, Japanese, simplified and traditional Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, German, French and Hungarian.

They also announced the membership levels for partnership participation in UnitedLinux, designated by two categories: Linux distributors and developer partners. Members will be assessed annual sign-up fees to offset development costs and contribute to marketing to brand UnitedLinux, provide technical training and certification and pay for financial and business audits.
