PROVO — Game over — at least for now.
The proposed closure of two elementary schools was slam-dunked Tuesday by members of Provo's school board.
"Loud and clear, I hear that our community wants neighborhood schools," said Ann Woolley, a member of Provo District's school board. "And I think we should honor that."
The sudden switch on the plan to close Joaquin and Edgemont elementary schools and use Farrer Middle School as an elementary school stunned parents and teachers.
A smattering of applause followed the vote to toss out the school closure idea from the budget-cutting playbook.
The flip-flop means a yearly $2.4 million budget shortfall must be covered with a double-digit tax increase.
Provo seeks a 14.6 percent increase of the school district's share of property taxes. A public hearing will be Aug. 27.
Will there be enough money?
"Yes — barely," said Lynn Smith, the district's main number-cruncher. The district is required by law to balance its budget.
