I am saddened but not surprised to learn of the excessive number of bankruptcies in Utah as reported in the Deseret News.

As part of a class on developing a happy, successful marriage, offered at LDS Business College, I taught eight lessons on financial management. I discovered many students were determined to be self-employed.

The problem was a lack of knowledge concerning the risks of operating your own business and the amount of capital required. The independent pioneer spirit found in Utah is great, but it must be tempered with good planning and common sense or disaster is sure to follow.
