The Detroit Tigers didn't know who to send to the plate. The Boston Red Sox couldn't wait to hit against a struggling Jamie Moyer.
Detroit batted out of order Wednesday night, but Anaheim's protest became moot when the Angels rallied for a 5-4 victory over the Tigers.
Brandon Inge, the No. 8 hitter, never batted the first time through Detroit's order because Tuesday night's lineup card was mistakenly posted on the dugout wall. That card had Chris Truby in the eighth spot, so he stepped to the plate after No. 7 hitter Shane Halter and struck out to end the second inning.
"The way that we were going about it was exactly what was on the wall. I mean, there was no way for us to know. What they put up is what we go by," Inge said. "Then they realized that the two cards were different. But by that time, it was too late. Everybody's going to make mistakes. Nobody's perfect."
Moyer was far from perfect, too.
Trot Nixon homered twice as Boston turned a tasty pitching matchup between Derek Lowe and Moyer into a slugfest, beating the Seattle Mariners 12-5 at Safeco Field.
Manny Ramirez and Shea Hillenbrand also went deep for the Red Sox, who remained five games behind the AL East-leading New York Yankees and two back of Anaheim in the wild-card race.
"It's not every day you see something like that done to a pitcher of his caliber," Hillenbrand said. "It was huge. Moyer has been pitching really well lately."
The Angels rallied at Edison Field behind Scott Spiezio's three RBIs and a tiebreaking RBI double by pinch-hitter Darin Erstad. They scored four runs in the sixth to take the lead for good at 5-4.
Ramon Ortiz (9-10) pitched into the seventh for the first time in five starts. Troy Percival got his 28th save, securing Anaheim's fifth straight victory.
Moyer (12-5) allowed 10 runs, nine earned, on 10 hits in 5 2-3 innings — the fourth time in his career he's allowed at least 10 runs. The soft-tossing lefty had won four straight decisions, and six of seven.
"Personally, I've never been in a ballpark when Jamie Moyer had a bad game," Boston manager Grady Little said. "I was pleased to see that."
Lowe (17-5) earned his fifth straight victory to become the league's first 17-game winner.
ATHLETICS 4, BLUE JAYS 2:Eric Chavez hit a three-run homer, Tim Hudson (9-9) pitched into the eighth and Billy Koch reached 30 saves for the fourth straight season.
INDIANS 6, DEVIL RAYS 4:Jim Thome hit a two-run homer, and Karim Garcia added a three-run double for Cleveland at Tropicana Field.
ORIOLES 6, TWINS 5, 14 INNINGS:Geronimo Gil homered off Tony Fiore (9-3) with two outs in the 14th to lift Baltimore to a wild win at the Metrodome.
YANKEES 3, ROYALS 2, 14 INNINGS:Bernie Williams hit an RBI single in the 14th as New York overcame Mike Sweeney's straight steal of home to win at Kauffman Stadium.
RANGERS 11, WHITE SOX 6: Rafael Palmeiro hit a three-run homer, and Herbert Perry matched a career high with four RBIs as host Texas built a big lead for Ismael Valdes (6-9).
