Taking the leap into marriage

A laughing bridegroom flies through the air after he is tossed over a snowy slope by a group of men during the annual mid-January festival of "Tossing the Bridegroom" Wednesday in Matsunoyamamachi in Niigata prefecture in northern Japan. The traditional Jan. 15 event in this snowy hot-springs resort originated in the Edo period, 1603-1867, when a group of local men gave the heave to a groom who married a local girl.
