GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona's population of endangered California condors is increasing to 41 with the arrival of eight more birds.

The young condors were hatched last year at The Peregrine Fund's center in Boise, Idaho, and were expected to arrive in the state Friday.

Officials of the nonprofit conservation group helping to return the giant birds to the wild said the young condors will be released in small groups after an acclimation period of at least six to eight weeks.

As of Jan. 1, there were 80 condors in the wild in Arizona, California and Mexico.
