PROVO — A judge has ruled that a Provo man accused of stabbing a woman on New Year's Eve will remain in jail unless he can post $25,000 in cash for bail.
Juan Antonio Martinez-Alfarez, 39, who was arrested Tuesday for investigation of attempted murder, appeared Thursday in front of 4th District Court Judge Fred Howard via closed-circuit television.
Howard found enough evidence was presented by prosecuting attorneys to keep Martinez-Alfarez in the Utah County Jail unless he has enough money to meet bail.
According to a probable cause statement filed in 4th District Court by police, Martinez-Alfarez told police that he was angry at his girlfriend because he feared she was going to run away with a co-worker to Las Vegas.
The victim, Maria Guadalupe Aguayo, is in stable condition at LDS Hospital.
Charges have not been filed against Martinez-Alfarez.
