WASHINGTON (AP) — Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta was in good condition after undergoing surgery Friday to relieve chronic back pain.

His doctors said the operation went well and they were pleased with the results.

Mineta, 71, underwent the procedure at Walter Reed Army Medical Center to relieve long-standing back pain related to disk stress and scoliosis, a curvature of the spine, Transportation spokesman Chet Lunner said.

Mineta is expected to spend the weekend in the intensive care unit and will resume his duties after a short recovery period in the hospital.
