SWAT team officers Sunday arrested a fugitive who eluded police during a high-speed chase the night before.

The man, 37, was arrested inside an apartment, 3300 South and 1300 East, following a standoff with police Sunday morning.

Salt Lake officers tried to arrest the man Saturday night on an $180,000 aggravated felony warrant, Salt Lake Police Sgt. Fred Louis said. Police say the man was an armed fugitive who had also threatened to kill his wife.

"He's been evading detectives for quite some time," Louis said.

Prior to Saturday's pursuit, the man had already fled from police at least twice, Louis said.

Authorities were notified Saturday at 5:40 p.m. that the man was inside a shop near 1200 South and 1300 West. The man fled the area in a stolen car at speeds of 100 mph, Louis said. Officers could not keep up and terminated the pursuit on I-80 near 1300 East.

Salt Lake County sheriff's deputies recovered the stolen vehicle used in the pursuit Sunday morning behind some businesses near the apartment, police said. After several hours of failed negotiations the SWAT team stormed the apartment at 5:40 p.m. and arrested the man without incident, police said.
