A Kearns man has been charged with assaulting and trying to kill another man on New Year's day.
The man, 53, had allegedly stolen his wife's car earlier that day after the woman refused to speak with him, according to charges filed Friday in 3rd District Court. The man's stepdaughter and two other men went to the man's house near 4700 South 5400 West to retrieve the car, charges state.
When one of the men tried to start the car, the man came out of his house and pushed him, then began punching him, according to charges. The man threatened to call police and went back inside, only to come back out with a handgun, charges state.
The man is accused of firing at the victim and threatening to kill. The gun was fired three times, hitting the victim in the arm, charges state.
Prosecutors charged the man with attempted murder, a first-degree felony; aggravated assault, a second-degree felony and two counts of discharging a firearm, a third-degree felony.
