Recently there has been interest in the contents of the Pledge of Allegiance. There has been much debate over the line, "one nation, under God." While I understand that not all Americans believe in the same higher power, eliminating this part of the pledge is disrespectful to those who do believe in saying it.
I do not in any way condone forcing people to recite things that they do not personally support. However, I feel that the option to include this part should not be eliminated. As a solution, I suggest a pause in the pledge where those so inclined may repeat the line and those opposed may choose to omit it. This will allow everyone to show respect for what they stand for and to adhere to their own beliefs while not forcing them on others.
