I was recently honored to spend Thanksgiving lunch with Howard Dean, Democratic candidate in the 2004 presidential election. Dean, a first cousin, was in attendance at a 40-year-old family tradition — Thanksgiving at our aunt's house in Long Island, N.Y.

I noticed he was bored with my incessant questioning and was more keen to check up on Utah. He inquired about our new governor, Olene Walker, and wondered how she was being received. He was hoping that Mike Leavitt, as new leader of the EPA, will follow up on his promise to "do the right thing" for our nation's environment. He thought it was "terrific" that Mayor Rocky Anderson was still the mayor. He asked about the state of Utah's budget. He inquired as to whether the state was experiencing a water crisis. The candidate has already paid Utah two visits and indicated he'd try to be back out for another. Recently Dean became the first candidate to file his papers in the Utah Democratic presidential primary.

Dean has Utah in mind. Voters should consider keeping Dean in mind.
