WASHINGTON — Pavel Datsyuk had two goals, including one when his pass was deflected in off a defenseman, and two assists in the Detroit Red Wings' 5-1 victory over the Washington Capitals on Saturday night.
Datsyuk, who has already surpassed his career high in goals, got his 16th when Washington's Jason Doig diverted Datsyuk's crossing pass into the open side of the net. Datsyuk, who was scoring on 28.3 percent of his shots entering the game, scored a more conventional goal with a late slap shot. He also assisted on goals by Kris Draper and Brendan Shanahan and drew the assignment of shadowing Jaromir Jagr most of the game.
Jagr got around Datsyuk once to score the first goal, but otherwise the Capitals managed only 19 shots in Glen Hanlon's second game as Washington's coach.
The Capitals won Hanlon's debut on Thursday, one day after he was promoted from assistant coach following the firing of Bruce Cassidy.
DEVILS 2, FLYERS 0: At Philadelphia, Grant Marshall and Mike Rupp scored goals and Martin Brodeur stopped 32 shots to record his 71st shutout as New Jersey sent Philadelphia to its first home loss of the season.
The Devils extended their unbeaten string to five games (4-0-1) and moved within four points of the Atlantic Division-leading Flyers. Philadelphia had won 11 straight home games and was 12-0-2 overall. The Flyers were the last team to lose at home this season.
The teams tied 3-3 on Friday night in New Jersey.
Brodeur, the active leader in career shutouts, earned his seventh of the season and recorded his Nhl-leading 16th victory. It was his fifth win in a row.
ISLANDERS 4, THRASHERS 0: At Uniondale, N.Y., Trent Hunter snapped a scoreless tie with 8:45 left and New York tacked on three more goals to beat Atlanta.
Garth Snow stopped 18 shots for his first shutout of the season, and Shawn Bates, Alexei Yashin and Michael Peca also scored for the Islanders, 3-0-0-1 following a seven-game losing streak.
The surprising Thrashers, who lead the Southeast Division, had their four-game winning streak snapped.
Hunter took a pass from Jason Blake on the left side, moved in on Pasi Nurminen, and scored when the goalie missed on a poke check.
MAPLE LEAFS 3, RANGERS 1: At Toronto, Mikael Renberg scored twice and had an assist to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs to a victory over New York. Gary Roberts added a goal and two assists for the Maple Leafs, who have won 10 of 11. Eric Lindros scored for the Rangers, who also lost to Toronto on Nov. 30 and Dec. 2. Both teams expressed anger at each other, and the game featured 20 penalties — including two fights. Toronto's Nathon Perrott lifted Jason MacDonald's sweater in the second period, and Toronto's Wade Belak repeatedly punched defenseman Dale Purinton in the face in the third.
BRUINS 3, SENATORS 2: At Ottawa, Joe Thornton scored with 9:03 left and the Boston Bruins ended a season-high, five-game winless streak with a victory over Ottawa.
Thornton scored the go-ahead goal off a turnover in the Ottawa zone. Boston defenseman Nick Boynton stopped the puck at the blue line and set up Thornton, who beat goalie Patrick Lalime through the legs with a shot from the left circle.
Brian Rolston scored a short-handed goal in the second period to tie it at 2 after making a superb pass to set up Glen Murray's opening goal 6:32 in.
Ottawa lost for just the second time in seven games (4-2-1).
CANADIENS 5, LIGHTNING 2: At Tampa, Fla., Yanic Perreault and Stephane Quintal scored 45 seconds apart late in the first period as Montreal beat Tampa Bay. Perreault added an empty-net goal in the third period. Niklas Sundstrom and Saku Koivu had the other Montreal goals and Sheldon Souray had three assists as the Canadiens improved to 6-3-2 in their last 11 games.
Dmitry Afanasenkov and Dave Andreychuk scored for the Lightning, who have lost three straight and are 2-7-2 in the past 11.
PENGUINS 5, BLUE JACKETS 3: At Pittsburgh, Tomas Surovy scored two goals and Aleksey Morozov added three assists as Pittsburgh extended Columbus' road woes.
Surovy, who scored midway through the second period to forge a 3-3 tie, completed his first career two-goal game by scoring during a power play at 13:02 of the third period.
Columbus (0-10-1-1) is the only NHL team without a road win this season. The Blue Jackets are winless in 14 road games dating to last season (0-12-1-1).
Brian Holzinger's fourth goal at 15:28 of the second period put Pittsburgh ahead 4-3 and gave Morozov his career-high third assist.
WILD 3, SABRES 2: At St. Paul, Minn., Jim Dowd scored in the final minute to rally the Minnesota Wild. Dowd's slap shot from the top of the right circle hit the blocker of goaltender Mika Noronen and deflected in. It was the fifth consecutive loss for the Sabres.
Minnesota scored more than two goals in a game for the first time since Nov. 19. The Wild managed just eight goals in its previous eight games.
The teams traded goals in an evenly played first period, with Miroslav Satan giving Buffalo a 1-0 lead at 8:49. For Satan, who led the team with 26 goals last season, it was just the second time he's scored in 20 games.
BLUES 2, KINGS 1: At St. Louis, Pavol Demitra and Eric Nickulas scored first-period goals and Chris Osgood made 21 saves for St. Louis.
The Blues have not lost to the Kings at home since the 2001-2002 season and are 3-0 against Los Angeles this season. St. Louis is 10-2-1-0 at home, including a 4-1 win over Los Angeles on Dec. 2. The Blues also beat the Kings 1-0 on Nov. 15 in Los Angeles.
Osgood earned his 289th career victory, which ranks sixth among active players. Los Angeles backup Cristobal Huet faced 27 shots.
PANTHERS 2, PREDATORS 2: At Nashville, Tenn., Martin Erat scored late in the second period to help the Nashville Predators tie the Florida Panthers.
The Predators pressed hard for the winning goal in the final minute of overtime. They kept the puck in the Florida end the whole time and fired several pucks at the net, including a drive by Scott Hartnell that rang off the right goal post.
Nashville took a 1-0 lead when Greg Johnson passed the puck across the front of the crease to Rem Murray, who was skating in from the left side. Murray tapped the puck past Florida's Roberto Luongo at 13:49 of the first period.
