NEW YORK (AP) — A spam-filtering company has a holiday gift for America's charities and nonprofit organizations: free one-year subscriptions to its software.

"Nonprofits can't necessarily avail themselves of cutting-edge technologies," said Eytan Urbas, vice president of marketing for Mailshell Inc., maker of the anti-spam software. "These are people who are working hard, a lot of them don't make a lot of money, for things they believe in. It feels like the right thing to do to support that."

Mailshell is giving away one-year subscriptions to its $30 desktop software product, which has to be downloaded to individual PCs. It works with existing e-mail programs to filter out unsolicited commercial messages, and lets users blacklist spammers who get through.
