DANVILLE, Ill. — The father of Utah Jazz forward Keon Clark has been found guilty of first-degree murder in the shooting death of an acquaintance.
John Clark, 46, was convicted late Thursday of shooting Clarence Cunningham III, 27, of Danville in the early morning hours of July 17. The two apparently had argued over a bicycle an hour before the shooting.
Prosecutors said Cunningham and Clark got into a dispute after Cunningham borrowed Clark's bicycle and, upon returning it, threw it down and kicked it.
Clark rode his bicycle to an aunt's house, where he got a .22-caliber revolver, then went to Cunningham's apartment and confronted the man, shooting him twice, prosecutors said.
Throughout the trial and during closing arguments, the defense argued Clark was acting in self-defense because he perceived Cunningham as a threat because of their earlier confrontation.
Vermilion County State's Attorney Frank Young said he will ask Circuit Judge Craig DeArmond to sentence Clark to the maximum penalty of 20 to 60 years in prison.
