More than a dozen businesses and homes in the Sugar House area were vandalized Friday night by a high-powered slingshot used to shoot holes in windows, police said.

Calls to police began with a report of a possible drive-by shooting at a Sugar House home, said Salt Lake Police Lt. John Cordova. Soon after, several businesses, including Jiffy Lube and a Carl's Jr. restaurant, reported holes shot in windows. In all, police dispatchers received about 18 reports near 2100 South between 700 East and 1300 East.

"We don't believe it's a gun they are using," Cordova said, but rather a slingshot using marbles and a pellet gun.

Cordova said police received about 20 similar reports of window damage in the same area last week.
