OGDEN — Two lost snowshoers on Mount Ogden made their way safely to the base about nine hours after they were due, the Weber County Sheriff's Office announced.
The men, in their late teens or early 20s, started on the Ogden side of Mount Ogden, were to ascend to the top, then descend to Snowbasin Resort, where a vehicle awaited them, Weber County Sheriff's Sgt. Chad Ferrin said. They were due back at 3 p.m. Saturday.
"They got caught in fog and a storm on top of the mountain. They couldn't see and didn't want to get disoriented. They stopped for a while," Ferrin said.
The men took refuge in a shack on top of the mountain until winds died and the fog lifted. Hours later, they headed down the mountain.
Meantime, a large search effort for the men started. Several searchers hiked up the mountain on foot, and a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter also searched , Ferrin said.
The men arrived at Snowbasin about midnight. They drove to a nearby gas station and called authorities saying the were fine, Ferrin said.
