Marlene Luverne Peterson, 70, of Provo passed away Thursday, December 11, 2003 at her home.

She was born May 8, 1933 in Thief River Falls, Minnesota to Morris and Lydia Owen.

Marlene grew up in Thief River Falls and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1951. She moved to Minneapolis and married Marlowe Earl Newkirk on December 31, 1952. They moved to California, where they lived off and on until 1977, when they divorced and Marlene moved to Provo. There she met and married Dallas H. Peterson on June 4, 1978.

Marlene loved music. She marched in her high school band and played the clarinet. Her most lasting love was the piano. She had a large collection of music and played nearly every day. Family visits always included time gathered around the piano and singing.

Marlene joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1975 as did two of her children. She found many opportunities for service and made many lasting friendships as a member of her church.

Marlene is survived by her husband, Dallas Peterson; her mother, Lydia Owen of Thief River Falls, MN; four sisters: Betty Laufman and Judy Owen of Thief River Falls; Loray Tupy of Apple Valley, MN; and Janice Moore of Millington, TN; three children: Judy Close of Uintah, UT; Greg Newkirk of Vancouver, WA; and Paula Johnson of Eagan, MN; ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her gentle, loving and generous nature will be greatly missed.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bonneville 2nd Ward Chapel at 85 South 900 East, Provo. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the Provo City Cemetery under the direction of Berg Mortuary.
