SOUTH JORDAN — A couple and their children were displaced Monday night after fire ravaged their home.
The blaze started in the basement of the house, near 11500 South and 1500 West, about 4 p.m. Monday. Flames ate through the ceiling, weakening the floor of the living room above. That, along with the weight of the living room furniture, caused the floor to collapse, South Jordan Fire Chief Phil Harris said.
"We actually started to see the floor sag," added South Jordan Battalion Chief Chris Evans. But firefighters were ordered out of the house before anyone was injured.
The majority of the two-alarm fire was doused in a couple of hours, South Jordan Battalion Chief Chris Evans said. Crews were expected to remain at the house all night to extinguish flare-ups.
Specific fire, smoke and structural damage estimates were not available Monday night. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
