"Together For Christmas"
Our wonderful and much loved dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully with his family at his side on December 15, 2003 in Bountiful, Utah.
He was born September 3, 1911 in Bear River City, Utah to Joseph H. Hewlett and Annie Josephine Nielsen. He married Edetha Merrell Talbot September 24, 1935 in Bountiful, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She passed away August 30, 2001.
He is survived by a daughter, Linda Ann (Nolan) Nielson; a son, Neal (Robin) Hewlett; 19 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren who were his delight; and a niece Dorine Hanks who grew up in their home, her three children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Vern started working at an early age to help his widowed mother and seven siblings. He worked on farms, drove a trade truck at age 11 between Brigham City, Utah and Star Valley, Wyoming, and later delivered coal and ice in Salt Lake City. He retired after 30 years from the University of Utah as the Physical Plant Operations Supervisor. He served in World War II participating in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a disable American Veteran. He could fix most anything and spent his nearly 30 years of retirement helping his children and grandchildren with repairs. He enjoyed working in his yard, but his favorite pastime was fishing. The only thing that was more fun than fishing was fishing with his children or grandchildren. Nobody could beat Grandpa at fishing! A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he loved his callings in the Sunday School and High Priests.
Funeral services will be held Friday, December 19, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at the Orchard 4th Ward Chapel, 55 E 350 N., North Salt Lake. Friends and family may visit Thurs. evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 North Main, and Fri. morning at the church one hour prior to services.
