A Kearns man was killed Saturday night, struck by a hit-and-run driver while trying to cross a street.

Killed was:

Edward P. Lile, 82, Kearns.

The accident happened about 6 p.m. while Lile tried to cross the street at 5858 Cougar Lane (4800 West), Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Reed Parkin said. Witnesses told deputies the elderly man was not using a crosswalk and was difficult to see.

The driver of the white passenger car that hit Lile did not stop after the accident, Parkin said.

Instead, he continued driving for several hundred yards to a residence, where he parked and went inside the home. At least one witness followed the driver and told deputies where he could be found.

The 21-year-old driver, whose name was not released, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of a class A misdemeanor hit and run, however an investigation was continuing Tuesday to see if additional charges might be considered, Parkin said.
