TEL AVIV, Israel — A bus tire exploded in Tel Aviv on Wednesday, causing a brief panic in a country on edge amid a flood of warnings about possible terrorist attacks on New Year's Eve.

Officials said there were no injuries. After the initial reports of an explosion, emergency vehicles rushed to the scene, but police and fire officials then said it was a flase alarm and there had been no bomb.

Israeli police had been on high alert after receiving numerous warnings of an impending attack — possibly timed to coincide with New Year's Eve.

People had also been on edge after Israel carried out an airstrike aimed at Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip. The Tuesday night airstrike wounded 11 people, but missed the apparent targets.
