Obituary: Leslie Royal Matson

"Silent Giant"

Our beloved husband, dad, grandpa, brother and wonderful friend, passed away peacefully March 9, 2003.

Les was born July 17, 1934 to Royal L. and Ethel Halladay Matson. He lived most of his life in Salt Lake City where he graduated from Granite High School and left for the Army shortly after and received an honorable discharge. Member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He married June Hatch in 1961 and they had seven children; later divorced. Les worked as a mail carrier and later got into his passion of making and selling cabinets. He worked for and retired from Fashion Cabinets. He continued his lifelong friendship with Gary, Joe and their families as they gave him love and unselfish service. Les, too, was one who gave unselfish service to anyone in need. He was a silent giant to many people. He married Esther Robinson July 9, 1983 and they had seven children. His family was his life.

He is survived by his children, Johnny (Matson) Ruga, Salt Lake; Brent (Nancy) Hatch, Washington; Cheryl (Mike) Burns, St. George; Dave Matson, South Jordan; Dale (Marilyn) Matson, Roy; Carlene Matson, South Jordan; Lorie (Dusty) Huntington, Castledale; wife, Esther Robinson Matson; seven sons, John, Jason, James, Mathew, Adam, Michael and Richard; 17 grandchildren; three great-grand-children; mother, Ethel Matson; brothers and sisters, Ron, Elaine, Marge, Ralph, Donna, Lois and Marilyn. Preceded in death by father, Royal Matson; sister and brother-in-law, Paul and Linda Danjanovich.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, 1:00 p.m. at the Millcreek 9th Ward, 420 East 4220 South. Friends may call Wednesday, 6-8 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road and Thursday at the church one hour prior to services. Interment, Elysian Burial Gardens.
