Cook-off and convention to offer Dutch-oven tips

Dutch-oven lovers can learn more about their craft with two upcoming events.

The 2003 International Championship Cook-off, sponsored by the International Dutch Oven Society (IDOS), will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the South Towne Exposition Center, 9575 S. State. Doug Miller and the International Sportmen Exposition are hosting the event, in which 13 teams of experienced Dutch-oven cooks will compete for the title of grand champion by preparing desserts, breads and main dishes, all from scratch and cooked on-site in a Dutch oven. A booklet of all the competition recipes will be on sale. Tickets for the Sportsmen Expo include admission to the cook-off.

The following week is the IDOS annual spring convention, March 21-22, at the Davis County Fairgrounds in Farmington. A DOG (Dutch oven gathering) will take place that Friday at 6 p.m. Participants should bring a potluck Dutch-oven dish and their own eating utensils. Saturday workshops will include "Basic Dutch Oven Tips and Recipes," 9 a.m.; "Delicious Dutch Oven Cakes," 10 a.m.; "Children Can Cook," 11 a.m.; "Recipes and Samples," 1 p.m.; "Healthy, High-Energy Cooking and Recipes," 2 p.m. Dutch-oven equipment and cookbooks will be sold. A general membership meeting will take place at 3:30 p.m. For information, check the IDOS Web site,
