Obituary: Gertrude Berniece Waldo Madsen


A joyous reunion occurred Saturday, March 8, 2003, when Berniece (84) returned home to her Heavenly Father and her beloved husband, Louis. Gertrude Berniece Waldo Madsen was born October 18, l918 in Los Angeles, California to Franklin Rich Waldo and Gertrude Francis Holden Waldo. She lived in Salt Lake City most of her life and graduated from West High in l936.

Berniece married her eternal companion Louis M. Madsen in l938. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. Theirs was a lifetime of love. Where one was the other could be found. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions such as secretary, librarian, and genealogy secretary. She also served a mission, with her husband, in Denmark and a stake mission in the Liberty Stake. She was a member of the Sugar House Chapter of the Daughters of Pioneers.

She was known throughout the neighborhood and her family as "the Candy Lady". She was very kind and any child who knocked on her door was assured some candy. No child was ever turned away.

Berniece is survived by many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers Vernal (Vern) H. Waldo and Marvin R. Waldo, and sister Marion F. Jensen.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 13, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the Holladay North Stake Center, 4395 S. Albright Drive. Friends may call one and one half hours prior to the service. Interment Salt Lake City Cemetery. Funeral Directors: Deseret Memorial Mortuary
