Three men were charged with two counts of mail theft, one a first-degree felony, the other a second-degree felony, after checks were taken from mailboxes.
On Jan. 21, a Sandy resident noticed a sports-utility vehicle traveling along the street in front of his house, charges filed Monday in 3rd District Court state. Someone inside the jeep removed all the mail from about 15 mailboxes, and the resident called police.
Police found more than 150 pieces of mail in the back of the jeep, including 17 checks worth more than $16,800 from one business and six checks worth more than $4,400 from another resident, charges state.
Since the crimes allegedly were committed by more than two people, the three men could face enhanced penalties, charges state.
