NEW YORK — Mountain View High School ran away with two relay races, and Utahns Heidi Magill and Amy Menlove placed second in their specialties at the National Scholastic Indoor Track and Field Championships in New York City over the weekend.
Mountain View's relay team of Heidi Houle, Kim Anderson Ann Marie Thomas and Heidi Magill won the distance medley relay by a whopping 11 seconds over runnerup Bronxville (NY) High and missed the national record by a half second. Their time was 11:49.68, anchored by Magill's 4:50.9 performance on the 1,600-meter leg.
Mountain View's team of Nate Houle, Steve Strickland, Jared Keller and Mike Steele won the 4-by-1 mile relay with a time of 17:38.75, two seconds ahead of Don Lugo High of California.
Menlove, an Alta High senior, leaped 19 feet, 6 inches in the long jump to take the runner-up spot behind Oakland's Renee Williams, who leaped 19-9. Menlove, who beat Williams while winning last month's Simplot Games, has jumped over 19 feet on eight of her last 13 attempts. Jordan's Amanda Feight was ninth with a jump of 18-6 .
Magill, a Mountain View junior, took second place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:08.04. Amber Harper, Orem High, was fourth in the 5,000.
