If asking for a "savings card" wasn't annoying enough, now it's, "The self-checkout line is open." Why would I want to use that? As a patron of an establishment, I should be the one being served. Whatever happened to "How are you today?" or "Can I help you find something?"
The self-checkout line is just another example of how customer service is getting worse. Supermarkets should be convenient, not annoying.
Instead of spending money on some new "innovative" checkout system, stores should spend money on employees to wipe the dust off of the rarely used checkout lines and get customers out of the store and on their way.
