7/17/1909 ~ 3/18/2003
Elly Cerveny Sandmann, age 93, died peacefully March 18, 2003, in Salt Lake City.
She was born July 17, 1909, in Liegnitz, Selesia, Germany to Klara Hedwig and Willi Cerveny. She emigrated, accompanied by Anna and Paul Sandmann, in December 1930 and settled in New York. On January 23, 1932 she married their son Linus Paul Sandmann.
The most important thing in Elly's life was her family. She enjoyed sewing most of her own clothes, gardening and doing needle work. Mom enjoyed singing in the local German Choir and after Linus' retirement, they moved to Salt Lake City in September 1977, buying a home in Cottonwood Heights. They were married almost 50 years when Linus died November 2, 1981. After that, Mom lived on her own until August 1996 when she moved in with her daughter Lynn for several months; and then to Germany with her son Ralph, who continued to look after her even after she entered a nursing home in September 1998. The family appreciates the care given her at Westside Community Nursing Center and to those who were at her side when she took her last breath.
She is survived by her three children, Eleanore, Lynn and Ralph; four grandsons and three great grandchildren. She will be missed by those she left behind but we know she rejoices in a reunion with the others who passed on.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 21, 2003, 11a.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, where friends may visit from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Interment will follow at Elysian Burial Gardens.
