As I watched the assembly in Cedar City paying tribute to Utah citizen soldiers leaving to war, two vivid memories came to mind.
First, I remember members of the Hollywood establishment visiting Hanoi and giving aid to the enemy as I served in Vietnam. Second, I remember the hundreds of thousands of regular citizens who lined the highways in a show of love and support for the departing citizen soldiers in the south during operation Desert Shield.
Our young men and women from the Salt Lake Valley have not felt love and support like the soldiers of Cedar City. Instead, their departures have been a mere footnote and, in some cases, shamed by the actions of some of the valley's elected officials.
It is high time for our elected officials to show support for Utah's young men and women of the armed forces.
