OREM — Mountain View boys soccer coach Dave Woolley knows his No.1-ranked Bruins caught a lucky break in his team's 2-1 overtime win over Timpview on Friday.
Mountain View's break came less then a minute into the second overtime period when Timpview's Stan Rosen turned to deflect a Bruin shot but instead scored an own goal giving Mountain View the overtime win.
"As much attacking as we did today, that is going to happen," Woolley said. "If you don't put balls in front of the net and you don't take shots from outside, you are not going to get lucky like that."
Mountain View probably would have put the game away early in the first half, but Timpview's goalie Tyler Cloward came up with several acrobatic saves.
Cloward allowed only one goal at the 34-minute mark of the first half when Ricardo Fernandez put in a loose ball in front of the net. Mountain View led 1-0 at halftime.
"Their goalkeeper kept them in the game over and over again," Woolley said on Cloward.
Timpview coach Mike Anderson also sung Cloward's praises.
"He was the player of the match, in my opinion," Anderson said. "He kept us in the game with his awesome saves."
Timpview tied the game at one with six minutes left in the contest when Joel Dayton booted in a ball from Sage Hale. Timpview's goal was the first Mountain View has given up this season.
The goal came minutes after Anderson moved defender Spencer Bardsley to play forward to put more pressure on the Bruin defense.
"We knew they hadn't been pressured all year," Anderson said. "That is how we got our goal."
Anderson and the T-Birds just wish they would have had a little extra time to put in another goal in the second overtime period.
"It's unfortunate it has to end like this, but I think there is a chance we could play them again in the championships," Anderson said. "I would have been happy with the tie, but I think we could have had the win. This shows me that we are capable of sticking with the best."
