U.S. national downhill title

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — LDS skier Steve Nyman claimed the U.S. national downhill title March 19 on Lake Placid's Whiteface Mountain.

Nyman, 21, crossed the finish line in 1:34.81 to win his first national title. The Sundance, Utah, resident was the 2002 World Juniors slalom champion.

Being a national champion in skiing's most exciting event "is pretty cool," he said. "I didn't expect it. I haven't skied well in the downhill this year."
