Donna Ryser Johnson and Lawrence Henry Johnson, devoted wife and husband for 54 years, died peacefully February 19, and 25, 2003, respectively.
Donna, age 77, suffered increasing complications since 1990 from a congenital heart condition. Larry, 79, suffering from oral cancer since 2000, passed five days after Dawn. The most important goal for Larry during his last three years was to be close to his companion until the end of her mortal life. As with all his goals, Dad definitely excelled at meeting his final goal on Earth.
Dawn, daughter of Johannah Carlson and George Peter Ryser, was born Aug. 12, 1925 in Salt Lake City, UT; Larry, son of Bessie Fulmer and LaRue Henry Johnson, was born Aug. 27, 1923 in Burley, ID. Dawn and Larry, living just three blocks apart, grew up in Salt Lake City and graduated from South High, 1941 and 1943. It wasn't, however, until after World War II that they formally met at their LDS Institute. At first good friends, and then a close couple, Dawn and Larry married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple Sept 1, 1948.
With Dawn studying Education and Larry, Business, both received BA degrees from the U of U in 1948. Larry also earned an MBA from G. Washington University, 1965.
Before becoming a homemaker, Dawn enjoyed teaching 1st-graders for six years. She served in many LDS auxiliary positions; her favorites were Sunbeams and Music. Dedicated mother and Air Force wife, Dawn made the many moves fun, especially to Germany, where Mom became skillful at restoring antiques.
Pilot during World War II and career officer since 1948, Larry, at age 38, at-tained full Colonel. Retiring with honors after 31 years of service. Larry's highlights were heading up the Air Force ROTC program at BYU, 1968-71 and coordinating Europe's LDS Servicemen Conferences with Pres. Benson in 1966, and Pres. Hinckley in 1967. After serving as Edgemont 9th Ward Scoutmaster, Larry served his ward as bishop, 1981-87. Dawn and Larry next served the Little Rock AK Mission for 18 months. For the past six years Larry served as Chaplain for Provo's Heritage School.
Dawn and Larry are survived by their children, Kim Lawrence (Claudia) Johnson, Cottage Grove, MN, Eric (Fátima) Johnson, West Jordon, UT, Daurie (Steve) Larimer, Beaverton, OR, Fawna (Vern) Gubler, Baton Rouge, LA; and 13 grandchildren.
