OGDEN — Orem played its first-round state 4A playoff game like a team with everything to win and nothing to lose.
The Tigers controlled the once top-ranked Provo Bulldogs from the opening tip and routed their Utah County rival 66-45 Monday at the Dee Events Center at Weber State. Orem came into the game with a sub-.500 record at 10-11 and Provo had only lost three games.
The Bulldogs only lead came when Tai Wesley scored the opening basket. But the Bulldogs couldn't survive on their inside game alone. The Wesley brothers, Tai and Tika, scored all 14 of Provo's first-half points.
While Provo looked flustered, Orem played composed from start to finish — executing on offense and showing great patience in opening a 13-point halftime lead. The Tigers trio of Brooks Christiansen, Jonny Nielsen and Lincoln Reid dominated the game.
A key segment in the game came midway in the third quarter when Nielsen scored eight straight points, sandwiched between two Reid dunks. Reid also finished the game by hammering home a break-away in the final minute.
Nielsen and Reid did not miss a field goal attempt, and the Tigers shot 67 percent for the game. Reid finished with 21, Christiansen 16 and Nielsen 14.
