BURLEY, Idaho (AP) — McCain Foods USA has announced plans to lay off 125 full-time workers from its french fry factory this June.
The company also will cut back from four 12-hour to three eight-hour work shifts and will operate fewer days per month, said Dale McCarthy, senior vice president of manufacturing for the potato group of McCain, based in Oak Brook, Ill..
"The bottom line is there's an overall softness in the demand for frozen potato products," McCarthy said.
Company officials said the layoffs are temporary and some employee benefits will continue to be provided to laid-off workers.
"It's our hope that over the next several months all our employees will be called back to work," McCarthy said.
It is not yet certain who will receive pink slips, but McCarthy said the layoffs will be scattered across all pay levels at the Burley plant.
