Obituary: Elsie McKay Urie

Elsie McKay Urie, 82, of Provo, Utah, died on March 5, 2003, of a stroke.

She was born January 12, 1921, in Ogden, Utah to Heber J. McKay and Mabel Mary Ann Shorten. She graduated from Weber College in Ogden, Utah, and later in 1943 from Brigham Young University. She married D. Ross Urie on November 9, 1947.

Mrs. Urie was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and well-known for her exceptional vocal talents. Throughout her life, Mrs. Urie sang in many groups, choirs, and choruses, most notably as a soloist for the Mendelssohns's Male Chorus and more recently as a member of the Madsen Memorial Ladies' Chorus. She will be remembered for her beautiful voice, loving demeanor, and wonderful pies and baked goods. She never uttered an unkind word toward anyone.

Survivors include her sons; Paul Urie and Matthew Urie and step-son Clifford Urie; brothers; Donald McKay and George McKay; and a sister Janice Thompson. Mrs. Urie was preceded in death by her husband, D. Ross Urie, her parents, and step-son Ross Madsen Urie.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 8, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. in the Slate Canyon 1st Ward Chapel, 715 Utah Avenue in Provo. Friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State St. in Orem and also Saturday from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. at the ward chapel. Interment will be in the Eastlawn Memorial Hills Cemetery.
