Ex-worker is target of probe of missing United Way funds

CEDAR CITY (AP) — A former United Way of Iron County worker is being investigated in the disappearance of at least $30,000 of the organization's funds.

Police detective Jerry Womack said United Way funds started disappearing in November 2001.

Chris J. Marchant, attorney for United Way of Iron County, said a preliminary audit indicated that the former employee may have circumvented accounting controls and misappropriated some of the organization's funds.

The charity's board looked into the financial records after being contacted by employees of the Children's Justice Center of Iron County, who said the center had not received an expected grant from United Way, Womack said.
