After reading the article about the 11-year-old biracial boy being questioned by a Wal-Mart employee as to whether he had stolen the $100 bill he was using to purchase a game, I was reminded of a similar incident that happened to my son.
When he was about 11, he mowed the lawn of a neighbor who always paid him with $1 in coins. One day my son (blond, Caucasian) took some of the coins to the local Kmart to make a purchase. The employee asked if he had stolen them. My son was also upset and embarrassed.
The point of my story is that maybe the bias, in both cases, had more to do with the age of the boys and the kind of money they were using, than their race.
