Like Joseph Goebbels of the Third Reich, you can always tell when Rush Limbaugh is working his propaganda magic on his fellow arch-conservative types (Paul Snyder, "Liberal bias obvious," and Don MacAngus, "Good riddance to editor"). Instead of Jews, the modern-day scapegoats are "the liberals." I liken today's political attitude to the way one views their family. The conservatives favor a strict-father family. On the progressive side, the idea of a nurturing family is extremely different. The nurturant parent wants to protect its children from crime, tobacco, drugs, chemicals in the environment, unscrupulous businesses, power-mad politicians — namely everything liberals would like the government to protect citizens from.
Open, honest two-way communication is paramount. Whereas in the strict-father setting, whatever the father says, the child does. You see this in attitudes toward government openness today.
