In your May 7 column on the Iraq war in The Christian Science Monitor, Mr. Hughes, you state that "Even if weapons of mass destruction are never found and the connection to al-Qaida is never established beyond all doubt, putting an end to this despicable regime has been a noble cause."

So, Mr. Hughes, no proof of WMD or al-Qaida but worth the loss of 5,000 to 10,000 Iraqi civilian lives and the lives of approximately 180 British and U.S. troops?

And how many "despicable regimes" throughout the world should we have "put an end to" through invasion and the sacrifice of American lives? North Korea, Cambodia, Chile, Chechnya, Guatemala, Rwanda, Yugoslavia, East Timor. The list is extremely long. I'm not sure we'd have any military left if our presidents had agreed with you.
