NEW YORK — Jeff Weaver unraveled after an error by Alfonso Soriano and the Toronto Blue Jays completed their first four-game sweep over the Yankees, winning 5-3 Sunday and sending New York to its seventh straight home loss.
The Yankees dropped their season-high fourth in a row overall, a skid that has dropped them out of the AL East lead. And their slump at Yankee Stadium is their worst since they lost 10 straight in 1986. New York has lost 11 of the last 12 at home.
Now, what had shaped up as a festive afternoon in the Bronx on Monday has become a little more desperate for the Yankees. While Roger Clemens will make his first try at earning his 300th career victory, he'll also try to stop the division-leading Boston Red Sox.
Greg Myers hit a two-run double and Josh Phelps also drove in two runs as the Blue Jays finished off a 8-2 road trip.
INDIANS 6, RED SOX 4: In Boston, Jason Davis pitched into the eighth inning and Milton Bradley drove in three runs with a pair of doubles as Cleveland beat Boston. Nomar Garciaparra extended his hitting streak to 25 games — longest in the majors this season — with a two-run double off Davis (4-4) in the eighth. The rookie retired 17 consecutive batters before Johnny Damon's two-out single, and the Red Sox rallied for three runs before falling short.
ORIOLES 13, RANGERS 10: In Arlington, Texas, Melvin Mora went 5-for-5, Jeff Conine drove in three runs and Luis Matos hit a two-run homer to lead Baltimore. Mora, who equaled a career high with five RBIs on Saturday, had a career high in hits Sunday and also drove in two runs. He has seven straight multihit games. Alex Rodriguez, Rafael Palmeiro, Carl Everett and Mark Teixeira homered for the Rangers, who have lost two straight following a seven-game winning streak. Texas leads the majors with 82 home runs.
WHITE SOX 8, TIGERS 5, 12 innings: In Chicago, Joe Crede hit a game-ending three-run homer off Steve Sparks (0-1) in the 12th inning and Chicago snapped Detroit's three-game winning streak. Carlos Lee hit his seventh career grand slam for the White Sox, who salvaged the final game of a three-game series against the worst team in the majors. Third baseman Eric Munson's throwing error with two outs in the 12th led to the winning rally.
ATHLETICS 4, ROYALS 3, 10 innings: in Oakland, Calif., Erubiel Durazo hit a game-tying homer with two outs in the ninth inning, and Mark Ellis hit a bases-loaded single in the 10th for Oakland. Durazo's two-run homer spoiled a brilliant start by Darrell May, who was one strike away from a five-hitter and his third career complete game.
In the 10th, shortstop Angel Berroa's throwing error on a routine grounder allowed Terrence Long to reach second base. After two walks by D.J. Carrasco (3-3), Ellis punched a single over the drawn-in infield.
Keith Foulke (3-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the win.
ANGELS 6, DEVIL RAYS 1: In Anaheim, Calif., Kevin Appier extended his dominance of Tampa Bay with six strong innings, and Jeff DaVanon scored on the front end of a double steal for Anaheim. Appier (3-2) improved to 7-0 with a 1.82 ERA in seven career starts against the Devil Rays. The right-hander allowed four hits, including a sixth-inning home run by Ben Grieve. Dewon Brazelton (0-4) took the loss.
TWINS 3, MARINERS 1: In Seattle, Rick Reed pitched seven sparkling innings and Dustan Mohr hit a home run a made a game-saving catch in the bottom of the ninth as the Minnesota Twins beat the Seattle Mariners 3-1 Sunday night. The AL Central-leading Twins won their third series in a row, while the AL West-leading Mariners lost a series for the first time in five series. Reed (3-5) lost his bid for a shutout when Bret Boone led off Seattle's seventh with his 12th homer of the season, a 399-foot shot to right. Reed gave up one run and five hits in seven innings without walking a batter. He struck out one. LaTroy Hawkins pitched the eighth for the Twins and Eddie Guardado worked the ninth for his 13th save this season and 20th straight, dating back to Sept. 4 in Seattle.
