PAYSON — The historic Payson Downs horse racing track is gone, but it appears there is a small legacy in the wings.
City recreation officials are developing an equestrian program to teach youngsters how to ride horses and will work with the Cocklebur Club and Payson Racing Association, two riding clubs that dominated the old track for years. A temporary training track has been built at the south end of the former track site.
Members from the local riding clubs will serve as volunteers to run the equestrian program, said Diana Erb, city events coordinator.
The clubs will provide some of the horses and equipment and the City Council has authorized $20,000 to buy and care for horses that would be easier for children to ride.
The council is also proposing to spend $10,000 for equestrian programs during the coming fiscal year which begins July 1.
