Can you "spare" a little time or money to help save a vanishing breed? Hogle Zoo hopes so and invites area residents to enjoy a fun night of bowling and help save the endangered rhinoceros at the same time. The 12th annual "Bowling for Rhinos" will be held Friday, June 6, from 6-9 p.m. at Olympus Hills Bowling, 4015 S. Wasatch Blvd.
For a $15 registration fee, bowlers will receive three games of bowling, shoe rental, sodas and all-you-can-eat pizza. Participants who raise $30 or more in sponsorships will receive a Bowling for Rhinos T-shirt.
Those who raise an additional $50 above their registration fee will be entered for a chance for a variety of door prizes. Bowlers can register in advance or at the door the night of the event. Proceeds will benefit three rhino conservation organizations.
The conservation efforts help the black and white rhinos at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya. In the Ujong Kulon National Park in Java, funds will aid the last 47 Javan rhinos in the world. In the Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park in Sumatra, the funds will help the conservation efforts of the last 200 Sumatran rhinos.
Utah's Hogle Zoo was the second highest fund-raiser in the country in 2002, and the zoo is aiming to raise the most funds in the country in 2003.
