MOAB — A Colorado man suffered a serious injury when he dove into a 4-foot-deep pond from a rock about 15 feet above the water.

Carl Tontevold, 28, of Rico, Colo., jumped into the pond just before 3 p.m. Sunday, while recreating in the Mill Creek area off the Flat Pass Trail, about eight miles south and two miles east of Moab at the end of Spanish Trail Road. Flat Pass Trail, also known as Steelbender, is on Bureau of Land Management land in an area of steep, slick rock popular with mountain bikers and off-road vehicles. The Mill Creek Trail is a footpath off the main trail with several waterfalls and ponds, a Grand County dispatcher said.

The Grand County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue team rescued Tontevold, who was transported by medical helicopter to St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo., accord- ing to a press released from the sheriff's office. Medical workers said the man had likely fractured his spine.

Tontevold was listed in serious condition Monday, a hospital spokesman said.
