There was a thread left out of the cloth in Jennifer Toomer-Cook's article of May 25. Not only should teachers be extolled to hold "real school" up through the end of the school year (which many of us do), but parents should also be reminded that school is in session until the last day.
Attendance in my class nosedives during the last few weeks of the school year as parents pull their children out for friends' birthday parties, Lagoon outings, baby-sitting, sports camps, vacations, shopping and just to stay home.
This is a huge problem in year-round schools, which mine is.
Kids will "check out" as early as the adults allow them to.
