In Friday's paper, Lee Benson asks where "everyone in the middle" of the Utah wilderness debate is.
Let us hope that they are not reading his column.
Benson's article contains numerous inaccuracies that serve to misconstrue the current imbroglio over Gov. Mike Leavitt's recent closed-door wilderness deal with Interior Secretary Gale Norton. He accuses the federal government of overstepping its bounds by "illegally land-grabb(ing)" 6 million acres of public lands for inventory as wilderness. He also says that everyone has forgotten that Utah already has 3.2 million acres of BLM wilderness.
However, neither point is true.
Benson might consider the following: Most Utahns value openness in government policy and the rule of law. Leavitt's decision has received mostly negative reaction because it flouts both of these principles.
