Cook Jr. <! >
3/3/27 ~ 5/26/03
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather Floyd Cook Jr. passed away Monday, May 26, 2003, at the age of 76, due to complications from cancer.
Floyd was born in Bingham Canyon, Utah March 3, 1927, to Floyd A. and Mildred Culmer Cook. He spent countless hours as a young boy and teen helping his mother, brothers, and sister run the family farm in North Orem while his father worked at Kennecott Copper mine during the week. He attended schools in the Alpine District and helped milk cows before school, hitched up the horses to do chores after school until he had to help with the evening milking, and started over the next day. Hard work was something he took pride in throughout his life.
He left high school early to join the Navy during World War II and served in the Pacific. After returning from the Navy he worked as a switchman at Kennecott and Geneva Steel. He married Mary Colleen Haws November 5, 1948; they were later sealed in the Manti Temple and had five children. With a young family he took a risk and went into business for himself as an excavation contractor. He became the best cat skinner in the valley, and dug hundreds of basements throughout Utah County. To keep the equipment running, he became an extremely skilled welder, mechanic, and jack of all trades. He built two houses of his own and could fix or make anything. After the death of Colleen, he married Sharon Elizabeth Bell July 10, 1974; they were later sealed in the Provo Temple.
He loved fishing, hunting, boating, riding dune buggies and camping with his family. He especially enjoyed driving to Alaska with Sharon to fish and camp. He spent much of his spare time in his shop if there was any kind of tool he didn't have, he would make or buy it. He had a great sense of humor, loved his family, and always supported them. He was a high priest in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Floyd was preceded in death by his wife, Colleen Haws Cook, and his sister, Velyn Cook Hurst. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Bell Cook; children: Kelly (Marlene) Cook, Mapleton, UT; Peggy (Bruno) Hunziker, Cedar Valley, UT; Linda (Gordon) Grange, Salem, UT; Terry (Gayle) Cook, Woodland Hills, UT; and Julie (Robert) Matthews, Blythewood, SC; Step-children: Norris Smith, North Salt Lake, UT; Melanie (Jack) Elizondo, Salt Lake City, UT; Derek (Donna) Smith Layton, UT; Kevin (Jennifer) Smith, Roy, UT; Leslie (Michael) Salas, Cheyenne, WY; and Stephanie (Cordell) Olsen, Logan, UT; brothers: Loren Cook, Copperton, UT; Verl (Londa) Cook, Provo, UT; and Melvyn Larry (Jean) Cook, Orem, UT; 18 grandchildren, six great-grand-children, and 19 step-grandchildren.
