LOS ANGELES (AP) — Two formerly conjoined Guatemalan twins flown back to the United States last week after experiencing problems are getting better, doctors said Tuesday. And one of the 22-month-old girls could be released from the hospital immediately.
Maria Teresa Quiej Alvarez and Maria de Jesus, who had been joined at the head, were separated in August by surgeons at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Maria Teresa, who developed E. coli meningitis in April, was in stable condition in an intensive care unit at UCLA's Mattel Children's Hospital, Dr. Jorge Lazareff said.
